LEAVING NO-ONE BEHIND:

FoRB AND GENDER EQUALITY IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Agenda 2030 makes an explicit commitment to ‘leave no-one behind’ and ‘to ensure that all human beings can fulfil their potential in dignity and equality’. The successful implementation of the Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires due attention to the right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB), including the right to non-discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief.

In his recent report to the UN General Assembly, the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Ahmed Shaheed, analyses the relationship between FoRB and the SDGs, demonstrating that religious or belief minorities are often among the people most likely to be left behind, suffering from discrimination, exclusion and inequality. Earlier this year, an Expert Consultation Process on FoRB, Gender Equality and the SDGs, co-organised by the UN Interagency Task-Force on Religion and Development, OHCHR, Danish Institute for Human Rights, and Stefanus Alliance International, explored the relationship between FoRB and the SDGs from a gender perspective, focusing on e.g. access to justice, education and health.

This event presents the key findings from the two reports, inviting some of the involved experts to discuss the consequences that discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief may have for religious or belief minorities, women or SOGI minorities, and to explore ways in which the promotion and protection of FoRB may contribute to implementation of these SDGs ensuring that no-one is left behind. The event is co-organized by the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, the Danish Institute for Human Rights, Stefanus Alliance International, and the Ralph Bunche Institute, and sponsored by the Danish and Norwegian Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
